Five things keep an engine healthy: oil, the cooling system, the air filter, spark plugs and the fuel system. The signs to watch for each.
The engine is the heart of the car, and keeping it in good condition decides its life, performance and fuel economy. In Brooklyn traffic, proper maintenance is what keeps it from breaking down.
1. Change the oil regularly
Oil lubricates the engine's moving parts and keeps it from overheating. It breaks down over time, so regular changes keep the engine performing.
- When: follow the interval in your owner's manual.
- Why: fresh oil reduces friction and wear, and helps fuel economy and engine life.
Skipping oil changes leads to engine damage and expensive repairs.
2. Keep the cooling system in check
The cooling system keeps the engine from overheating, in hot weather and in long stretches of traffic. A failing one can cause serious engine damage.
Signs the cooling system needs attention
- The engine overheats
- The coolant level is low
- Strange smells, or leaks under the car
Check the coolant level regularly, and have the system flushed when it is due.
3. Replace the air filter
The engine needs a steady supply of clean air. A clogged filter lowers fuel economy and performance.
Signs of a dirty air filter
- Poor acceleration
- Unusual engine sounds
- Lower fuel economy
Your owner's manual gives the replacement interval; driving in heavy traffic or dusty conditions calls for changing the filter sooner. It is an easy and inexpensive job.
4. Keep the spark plugs in good shape
Spark plugs ignite the fuel. Worn plugs cause poor acceleration, misfires and higher emissions.
Signs the spark plugs need replacing
- The car is hard to start
- The engine misfires
- Fuel economy drops
Replace them on the manufacturer's schedule.
5. Keep the fuel system clean
The fuel system delivers fuel to the engine. Over time the injectors can clog and the engine runs worse.
Signs of fuel system trouble
- A rough idle
- Poor acceleration
- Lower fuel economy
Clean injectors keep the fuel flowing as it should, and the engine efficient.
