Noises, vibration, a soft pedal, a warning light and longer stops: the five signs that your brakes need attention, and what each one means.
Brakes matter everywhere, and most of all in Brooklyn's stop-and-go traffic. These are the five signs to watch for, so a brake problem is caught before it becomes a costly repair.
1. Squealing or grinding noises
Unusual noises when you brake are the most obvious sign.
- Squealing: often worn brake pads, or debris caught in the brakes.
- Grinding: more serious, usually metal on metal once the pads have worn through.
Ignoring the noise can damage the rotors, so have the brakes checked soon.
2. Vibration when braking
If the car shakes when you brake, the rotors may be warped. Wear and heat can make them uneven over time.
- Usually felt when braking from higher speeds.
- Resurfacing or replacing the rotors restores smooth braking.
3. A soft or spongy pedal
A pedal that feels soft, or goes nearly to the floor, can mean air in the brake lines, low brake fluid, worn parts or a problem with the master cylinder. It reduces braking power.
Have the brake fluid, the lines and the master cylinder checked.
4. A brake warning light
The brake warning light can mean low brake fluid, worn pads or a fault in the system. Low fluid may point to a leak or worn parts. Have the brakes inspected right away.
5. Longer stopping distances
If the car takes longer to stop, the brakes are losing effectiveness: worn pads, low fluid or rotor problems. It is a serious safety concern in heavy traffic. Have the system checked and repaired promptly.
